How to Repost a Reel on Instagram Story (Without Cutting It Off)

Sharing a Reel to your Story is the easiest way to support other creators. But have you ever noticed that sometimes the Reel cuts off after 15 seconds, or the background looks messy? Here is how to make your Story reposts look aesthetic and professional.

Read this guide on Instagram reposting and copyright rules before reposting on Instagram.

The Native Method:

  1. Tap the Paper Airplane on the Reel.
  2. Select “Add to Story.”
  3. Pro Tip: Tap the video once to show the caption, or tap again to hide it and just show the username.

The “Background” Hack: When you repost a Reel, Instagram defaults to a weird color gradient background. To fix this:

  1. After adding the Reel to the story editor, select the Draw Tool (scribble icon).
  2. Choose a solid color from the bottom palette.
  3. Long Press (hold your finger down) on the background for 2 seconds.
  4. The whole background will change to your solid color, making the Reel pop!

How to Share the FULL Reel (60s+): Sometimes, Instagram Stories only play the first 15 seconds of a shared Reel.

  • The Fix: Currently, this is an Instagram limitation. To share the whole video, you are better off downloading it using a tool like InsTake (mentioned in our Best Apps Guide and uploading it manually—but remember to tag the owner!

Conclusion:

Stories are great for quick engagement, but if you want the content to live permanently on your profile, you need to repost it to your Feed. Check out our main guide on How to Repost to Feed for the best tools.
